Subject: [SCMARION-L] Parents of Lewis Gordon Barfield
Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 12:18:05 EDT
Someone, and I cannot remember who, or even if it was someone on the Marion
List, raised a question about the identity of Lewis Gordon Barfield, who is
buried at the Elvington / Barfield Cemetery on Nobles Road just off Hwy #9
near Lake View. Also buried there are William W. Barfield (who was a son of
Barrett "Writ" Barfield, Jr.) and William's wife, Percy Price Barfield,
daughter of James S. Price. Also buried in this cemetery is Parkey Barfield.
Parkey Barfield has long been established as a son of this William Barfield.
I just found the following deed at the Marion Archives last week. It almost
certainly refers to the same man, Lewis Gordon Barfield, who is buried at the
Elvington Cemetery. It probably establishes his parents as William and
Maranda Percival "Percy" Price Barfield. (Percy's tombstone shows her name as
Amanda P. Barfield, but census records and her death certificate indicate
that her name was Maranda Percival.)
It is still a mystery why William and his wife Percy are buried at what
appears, in all other regards, to be an old Elvington Family Cemetery. It is
several miles from other lands owned by William, by his brothers, and his
father Writ's homesite. Also distant from lands owned by Percy's father,
James S. Price. It seems to be on lands once owned by old Jesse Elvington,
possibly near his homesite, and certainly the Elvingtons buried here were
descendants of Jesse Elvington.
