Subject: [SCMARION-L] King family of Robeson County, NC and Dillon County, SC--Samuel A. West?
Date: Thu, 9 Jan 2003 08:20:56 -0500
Hi,
Could anyone tell me how to get in touch with Mr. Samuel A. West whom
Andi recommends I contact in the email below? He researches genealogy
in the Robeson County, NC area and often at the Lumberton Library. I
thought someone might know if he has an email address or might know his
phone number. I am most grateful to Andi for mentioning this.
Thanks,
Sharlotte
Dear Donnelly:
I kept reading over your email, and it come to me that when I was in
Lumberton, NC last year I met a gentleman in the Library who was able to
help me with my Kinlaw ancestors. Well to make a long story short this
gentleman, a Mr. Samuel A. West met me in the Library, and has a book
which
is able 8 or 9 inches thick which I am surre will help you. Mr. West is
a
very highly respected researcher in that area of the state of NC. His
prices are a little on the steep side, but I have found that he is well
worth it.
This book (which he has privately compiled)is all in his hand writing
and
has references to most family connections in Robeson County. When I
paid
Mr. West to check his book (he calls it his Data Control Book)on my
Kinlaws,
I learned information on two of my back generations that I did not know.
While looking through the book (the only section I was concerned with
was
the "Ki" section) I remember seeing the Edward and Margaret King that
you
spoke of in your email. They were listed there because their last name
started with "Ki". Well, I took notice simply because one of my
ancestors
was a Edward Kinlaw, and I thought it was Kinlaw, but then found that it
was
King. Well to make a long story short when I looked closer, I remember
that
the names of the mother and father of both Edward King as well as his
wife
Margaret King were listed record that he had referenced. When I come to
realize that this Edward was not my Edward Kinlaw and that he was Edward
King so then I went on to the other entrys. I am sorry but I do not
recall
what names of their parents, but I do specifically recall that their
parents
names were listed in Mr. West's Data Control Book. I don't know if he
has
done it yet but Mr. West said that he was starting to put this
information
in his computer.
I don't know what he charges now, but last year he was charging $100 to
run
a search in his book. If we found anything he allowed us to write down
his
sources from his book and get copys ourselves, but if we wanted him to
get a
copy for us it was $15 a sheet for the copys. When I met him I told him
I
thought that it was a bit too steep, but then he said to take it or
leave it
that this was references that has took him more than 25 years to
collect.
He said that if someone would hire him to do the resarch that they would
pay
much more. He was nice enough but appeared to be some what firm in his
offer. Well to make a long story short I paid him for mine on the
Kinlaws
and he did come up with several references that linked me up to the
early
Kinlaw generations.
I don't have his address or phone number but I am sure if you call the
Library in Lumberton, that they can give it to you. He is very well
known
by the folks at the Library and Courthouse there.
I hope you success in your ancestor hunting.

>Wow, Sandy,
>Thanks so much! I know that William Edward King's wife Margret J.
>(maiden name unknown) did die before him while some of their children
>were young, but I do not have a date. Are you related to the William
E.

>was a farmer and carpenter who was born in March 1850 in North
Carolina.
>Do you know when and where that marriage of William E. King and

>Pauline King. Nettie Donnie King Neely Riley was my paternal
