Alford, Nancy Susanna Brown
MULLINS -- Mrs. Nancy Susanna Brown Alford, 94, widow of Edward Manuel
Alford, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at Marion County Medical Center after an
illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at the
Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be David Wensil, James
Strickland, Carl Smith, Ben Haigh, Burke Drew and Colby Strickland.
Mrs. Alford was born Sept. 16, 1908, in Marion County, a daughter of the
late William Joseph Brown and Martha Catherine "Mattie" Shelley Brown. A
lifetime resident to the area, she was a member of the Mullins First Baptist
Church and the Ladies Bible Class. For many years, she was bookkeeper for
Carolina Furniture House in Mullins, where her husband and son-in-law
established the business in 1959. An avid genealogist, she recently
published a book entitled "A Family History", a culmination of more than 40
years of research, reaching back to the 1700's, including the Brown, Fowler,
Shelley and Williamson families. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother,
Mrs. Alford enjoyed cooking, canning, baking, and gardening. In addition,
she was an accomplished needlepoint artist. Mrs. Alford will be remembered
for her generosity in sharing her talents. A lovely and humble lady, she
touched the lives of a large family and a host of friends.
Survivors include three daughters, Elsie A. Drew Williams of Mullins,
Kathryn A. McCormick and her husband Malcolm of Nichols and Ann A. Fowler
and her husband Fred of Mullins; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. James E. (Hazel)
Alford of Bradenton, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Ernest (Nina) Jones of Mullins;
nine grandchildren, Nanette McCormick Strickland, Michael McCormick, Teresa
Fowler Smith, Brenda Fowler Wensil, Rick Fowler, Gwen Drew Haigh, Jim Drew,
Johnny Drew and Lonni Drew; 12 great grandchildren and three great great
grandchildren.
Mrs. Alford was predeceased by a son, James Edward Alford, and a brother,
Willie Arthur Brown.
Memorials may be made to Mullins First Baptist Church, Missions Programs, PO
Box 443, Mullins, SC 29574 or to the charity of one's choice.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2003 at
Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
