Subject: [SCMARION-L] Replying to List Messages and Digests
Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 12:28:48 -0400

Just a wee note for folks who are new to mailing lists and a
reminder to old hands --

When replying to list messages, it's always good Netiquette
to "trim" the previous message to only that which is needed
to "introduce" or explain our reply. For example, if someone's
posted a full descendant chart and you want to ask about just
one person on the chart, let's call him John Doe, here's what you do:

Hit the Reply All button -- the full message should be in
your new outgoing email together with the previous poster's
name.

Leave the previous poster's name; you'll want to ensure that
we know whose message is being replied to, but Erase everything
else except the line or lines that has John Doe's information on it.
Add any info or questions you'd like to send to the list either above
or below the old info, and sign your email. If the previous message
has a Subject line of "Doe Family", you may want to change the
Subject line to "John Doe 1820" or perhaps "Jane Smith 1820" if
you want to pursue the maternal line.

For those of you in Digest mode, you will need to change the
Subject line of your email to the list. "Digest XYZ" won't mean
much to anyone, and your message may never be read. So,
using the example above, you might want to change the Subject
line to "John Doe 1820" or to "Doe-Smith Family".

Please take care to NEVER include an entire digest in a message
sent to the list. It uses an awful lot of what they call "bandwidth";
i.e., takes up a lot of unnecessary space on our host's servers,
folks have to spend time downloading large messages they've
already read.

Please do your very best to consider how much, if anything!, you
need to include of a previous post before sending your reply.

Cheers,
Victoria
