Brown, A. Lavern
MULLINS -- Mr. A. Lavern Brown, 80, husband of Elizabeth Cook Brown, died
Thursday, June 12, 2003, at his residence after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at Gapway Baptist Church
with the Rev. Chip Scruggs officiating. Burial will follow in Devotion
Gardens Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Mr. Brown was born June 11, 1923, in Marion County, a son of the late W.
Arthur Brown and the late Alice Alford Brown. Mr. Brown had worked for Belk
for 37 1/2 years and was manager for Aberdeen Outlet Stores for 10 years. He
was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. Mr. Brown was a
graduate of Mullins High School. Mr. Brown enjoyed fishing, working in his
garden and loved to watch the Atlanta Braves play baseball. He will be
fondly remembered by his grandchildren for the time that he played with
them. Mr. Brown will be remembered by many people for his wit. Mr. Brown was
a member of Gapway Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a member of the
Men's Bible Class.
Surviving Mr. Brown in addition to his wife of the home are his children,
Beverly Brown Proctor and her husband Freddie of Mullins, Franklin Brown and
his wife Judy of Manning, Bryan Brown and his friend Joni Long of Mullins;
his grandchildren, Chris Proctor, Cameron Proctor, Timmy Brown, Julie Brown,
Derek Brown, Beth Brown Barnhill, Bridget Brown Porter, Brandon Brown and
Meaghan Long; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Don Brown of Mullins; and
five sisters, Grace Capps of Myrtle Beach, Ruby Pittman of Conway,
Dortherine Tate of Matthews, N.C., Jean Harrelson and Lois Permenter, both
of Mullins.
Memorials may be made to Gapway Baptist Church, c/o Deborah K. Brown, P.O.
Box 731, Mullins, SC 29574 or to Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St.,
Florence, SC 29506.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
