Subject: [SCMARLBO-L] Families of Purrington Rascoe & Alexander H. Rascoe
Date: Mon, 6 Dec 1999 17:13:41 EST
Seeking additional information on Purrington Rascoe and his descendants in
Marlboro County:
Purrington Rascoe was born about 1805 in Marlboro County. It is believed that
he was a son of Alexander Rascoe who was first listed in Marlboro County in
the 1800 census. The deed records index of Marlboro County indicates that
Purrington Rascoe sold or mortaged 158 acres of land on Gap Branch in
Marlboro County to M. Townsend September 2, 1939. No record of how Purrington
obtained this property in the first place but he likely got it from his
father Alexander who had purchased 200 acres on Clarks Branch in Marlboro
County from Thomas Turner February 7, 1803.
Purrington Rascoe died in Marlboro County sometimes between 1860 and 1866. It
is not known who his wife was but her maiden name may have been McDaniel. She
apparently died between 1843 and 1850. Their children appears to have been:
1) James Rascoe b. ca 1827, married Ann Thomas. Died about 1860.
2) Mary A. Rascoe b. ca. 1828. May have married Alexander English.
3) Lucresia Rascoe b. ca. 1831. Married Joseph S. Thomas.
4) William Rascoe b. ca. 1835. Married Mary Ann ___?___. Died in Civil War.
5) Alexander H. Rascoe b. ca. 1837. died after 1910. He was married 3 times.
His 1st wife is to have been Parky McCauel. His second wife was Elizabeth
__?__. His third wife was Sarah A. Gibson. (see additional data below).
6) Jane Rascoe b. ca. 1841. It is believed she married a man named Bristow.
7) Daniel Rascoe b. ca. 1843. May have died in 1861 Virginia during the
Civil War.
Purrington may have had a daughter named Obidance or Bidy Rascoe who married
James Bounds.
Alexander H. Rascoe was born about October 1837 in Marlboro County and died
sometimes after the 1910 census was taken. It is believed that he is the only
son of Purrington Rascoe to have survived the Civil War. He served in the SC
21st Infantry, Company "F" CSA. Alexander H. Rascoe was married three times.
His first wife was believed to have been Parky McCauel and they were probably
married about 1864 or earlier. Parky apparently died between 1870 and 1880.
Alexander Rascoe then married some one named Elizabeth surname unknown.
Elizabeth Rascoe died January 16, 1884 and on December 6, 1885 Alexander H.
Rascoe married his third wife Sarah A. Gibson. The known children of
Alexander Rascoe were:
1) John Rascoe born about 1865. Married Martha __?__.
2) Mary C. Rascoe b.ca. 1867-8
3) Alice Rascoe b. ca. 1869.
4) Colon Rascoe b. ca. 1869. Moved to Charleston SC.
5) Daniel Rascoe b. ca. 1869-70. He was married twice. 1st wife unk. 2nd wife
Annie __?__.
6) Annie A. Rascoe b. ca. 1870-71.
7) Ollia M. Rascoe b. ca. 1891. Died July 1904.
8) Leroy Rascoe b. December 2, 1892, died February 1970 Bennettsville S.C.
In the 1910 census in Alexander H. Roscoe household were three other
children: a younger Daniel Roscoe age 16 listed as a son. Elvira Roscoe age 4
listed as a step daughter and Alexander Roscoe age 2 listed as a step son.
The last two may have been grandchildren, possibly sons of the older Daniel.
It is not known for certain how these Rascoe families which seem to have
changed the spelling of their name to Roscoe are related to George Washington
Roscoe and his family who also lived in Marlboro County. They were probably
cousins. It is also uncertain how these Marlboro County Rascoes related to
the Roscoe families that were in Chesterfield County but the connection seem
to be with the father of George Washington Roscoe who was a John Rascoe born
in Marlboro County about 1794.
Several Roscoe families still remain in Marlboro, Chesterfield, and
Darlington Counties in South Carolina and in Richmond County North Carolina.
Apparently they know nothing of their family history or they do not wish to
share it with other. After several attemps to get responses from them via the
mail I have given up. If there is any collateral descendants that I am
unaware of that can provide additional data on these families I would
appreciate hearing from them or anyone else who has knowledge of these
families.
