I am slowly but surely reading through my new "toy", the Will Book of SC,
and checked the index for Herndon and James. There was only one reference
to a John Herndon, page 257, where he is mentioned in the record of Joseph
HARGROVE, Ninety Six Dist., ,"take up bond from John Herndon & fully empower
them to deliver to him Lease & Release of a Tract of land Lying on Chevers
Creek." dated 12 Aug. 1776. By the way, Laura, did you touch base with
those people whose address I sent you that I met in B'sville at the
courthouse?

I have a question for the James Gang. Does your line go back to the early
James that were members of the Welsh tract?

death of my wife; Eleanor, Elizabeth and Sarah. Exors: wife; Edward Jones.

D. 3 May 1766, P: 12 May 1770.

On page 99, William James witnessed a Will of Isaac Thompson, in 1767, St.
Mark's Parish , PeeDee, Craven Co.

Page 228, Will of Gavin Witherspoon, "Queens Burgh Township", Craven County,
planter. Wife: Jean. Sons: Robert; John, plantation on Great PeeDee where
he now lives; Gavin, 3 tracts on Great Pee Dee at Catfish Creek. Daus:
Jean and Elizabeth, under 21 years and unmarried. Adopted son; JAMES,
FIFTH SON OF WILLIAM JAMES; Mentions : to wife and son Robert, plantation
where I now live; my tract NE of Catfish Creek. Exors: wife; sons John,
Robert and Gavin; John James, Sr. Wit: Thomas Jolly, Robert Wilson, David
Wilson.
D. 5 Jan. 1773 P. nd R. nd p. 180 (nd= no date of Will, proof or
recording)

There was no mention of a Ben or Gideon James in the index. There were
other references to Wm., but the ones I posted were the most informative.

Hope this helps someone.
