Hi,
I am researching the family of John JONES of Marlboro District. John was
born about 1780, probably in Richmond County, North Carolina. A John
Jones is listed in the 1812 tax list of Marlboro County, and is assumed
to be this man. In the 1820 census of Marlboro District, there is a
family of John Jones listed that matches this man, including John Sr, his
wife [name unknown], John Jr. (b. about 1806), Robert (about 1807), Frank
(about 1809), Mary "Polly" (about 1814), and Katherine (about 1818).
Another son Elias was born in Marlboro in 1824. By 1830, John and family
had moved to Duplin County, North Carolina. John may have been in the
turpentine business, hence he moved around quite a bit, following the
long leaf pine... By 1850 John had moved with several of his children to
western Tennessee. John Sr. died, probably in Gibson County, Tennessee
around 1857. I am trying to find who John's parents were, and also who
any siblings may have been. I am also trying to confirm that I have the
right John Jones. Everyone knows how difficult that can be. I wish my
wife had chosen an ancestor with a less common name .... She also has a
William Smith in her ancestors.
Thanks, Tom in Chapel Hill
