Hi Karen!
I am right with you in looking for clues to West's
parentage. I don't have him in 1790 in Edgefield, but
do find hin in 1810 Edgefield census. No 1800 or 1820,
but by 1828 he is petitioning for Haywood County, NC
to be partitioned into Macon County. He was probably
living in the Cane Brake section of present day
Transylvania County at that time. 1830, he is in
Buncombe County, NC and 1840 in Macon County, NC.
There are some Patterson's who were in OPD in the
upper part of Pickens County whom I have been looking
into and also some Moore's. These Patterson's/Moore's
intermarried within each other. We believe Frances,
West's wife, to be a Moore. I think she could be a
daughter of Burton Moore. Their son, John Bird
Patterson middle name could have been Burt instead of
Bird. But, West's granddaughter, Selena Patterson
Galloway, in her Guion Miller Roll application stated
that West's mother was a Nancy Bird. Anyway, West and
Frances could have moved briefly to the Edgefield
District for farm land as the upper part of Pickens
County is very mountainous and most of the farmland
was probably already bought up or granted out. Then,
again, he may have been from the Edgefield District.
Another possibility for West's father could be
Matthew Patterson who was living in the French Broad
Valley of present day Transylvania County, NC in the
early 1800's. This was during the time of the Walton
War between GA and NC. West could have moved his
family south to avoid the bloodshed that was
sporadically occurring in the area. Pure speculation,
though, on my part. I do know that my g-aunt, Aurie
Chappell Morgan, g-granddaughter of West and Frances,
said that he was buried in the old cemetery in the
Cane Brake in a 1985 telephone conversation with her.
Also, in 1996, when I visited with her at the nursing
home in Pickens, she said that Wes was buried there.
Her mind was clear as a bell and she was about 99
then. That area is now in Gorges State Park too close
to the Foothills Trail for my comfort.
Just some ideas to get the brainwork flowing. We
need to find some documentation placing him in
Edgefield prior to 1810, such as land transactions.
