I had the mtDNA from my mother's side tested just to learn more about.
Surprisingly, she was not descended from the largest European female
line, but rather from Haplogroup I as in "eye." If the chart below
comes through in your email, you will notice that . . .
WE ARE IRANIAN. The "I" group, which is found in less than 2% of
Europeans can be traced back 43,000 years ago (when it deviated or
broke off from the main line, most likely in Iran. Okay, I'm what you
call an old Iranian. We've lost the mother tongue, so to speak. So,
from now on in the census, I'm going to call myself Scot-Irish-Iranian.
Given the dates, I suppose I should put my mother's origin first, Iran.
Of course, they were only passing through Iran on their way from Africa
to Baltimore, Maryland ca. 2005. So, I'm going to say
African-Scot-Irish-Iranian. But then there's also creationism, in which
case I'm descended on my father's side from Adam and Eve about 5,000
years ago. There's a chap for whom the Gaelic language is named who
was saved from a serpant's bite by Moses. He told him he would someday
live in a land with no snakes. He migrated to Egypt, then Spain and
eventually to Ireland. Around 400 AD his descendents migrated to
western Scotland, and his people were named after his wife, Scoti (or
something like that). That makes us Jewish too, right? So now I'm
going to have to be: African-Scot-Irish-Iranian-Jewish American, which
means I'm starting to become pretty much just a real "human being." But
still just a Kansas kind of guy, shaped a lot by Hawaii. Requires a
sense of humor, no? I leave for South Africa tomorrow and return on
Feb. 14th or so. Larry K

P.S. Michael will be glad to know he's really Jewish. I hope he likes
the African and other parts. How about you?
