Hi Nancy.
By a strange coincidence I too am on the hunt in Glassary parish, not for
Carnban but for a place called "Park of Cavact" --- not sure of the last
word. I borrowed the appropriate Landrange one inch to the mile maps (Nos
55 and 62) from Dunfermline library but so far I have had no luck.
Now for the good news Nancy. There is a CAIRNBAAN, a small village (but big
enough to have a hotel) on the B841 road which runs alongside the Crinan
Canal and connects the A816 road to Crinan itself. Cairnbaan lies about
three miles southwest of Kilmichael Glassary and three miles northwest of
Lochgilphead, and the ruined hill-fort of Dunadd, once the capital of
Dalriada, Kingdom of Scots, is supposed to lie four miles to the southeast.
There are at least two sites in the area shown as "Carn Ban" in ye olde
english lettering. Presumably Cairnbaan derives it's name from the nearest
site about half a mile away. The symbol used by the OS mappers indicates
that a "Carn Ban" is a visible earthwork.
I trust the above information is of use to you Nancy --- I wish I'd been
searching for Cairnbaan :-(
Regards, Andy (Dalgety Bay, Fife)
PS If you need any more info, reply soon, as the maps go back on Friday.
