Ask at your local FHC/public library/genealogy group to see who has a
gazeteer of Scotland or the British Isles. This will give you all the info
you need on any placename in Scotland.

Sounds like he was married twice. Bear in mind that married Scottish women
often referred to themselves, and were often known by, their maiden-names.
Jane and Janet were also inter-changeable. If you can get their death
certificates (if they died 1855+) they will clear up the puzzle. Pre-1855
burial records should also shed some light on it.
Your local public library should have a book on the origin of surnames.
