Hi Gloria.

Censuses did include institutions such as prisons and mental
institutions etc. These were normally enumerated apart from the Census
at large and it was the head of the institution that was responsible for
providing Census information. The information they provided should
still be available to the public in those Censuses that have been
released.

As a matter of interest, First Nations people living on reservations
were also enumerated seperately. I am not sure that such is the case
for the taking of today's Census.

Happy Hunting.

Subject: Census Question

Can anyone tell me if prisoners were included in the census. I know
they should be, but I am wondering how one would find out where someone
was imprisoned in 1901 Eastern Townships.
I ask as it turns out a subject of my research stabbed someone to death
right after the 1901 census. (October 1901).
I only have the newspaper clip of the death of the victim and name of
the assailant and so don't know where/what happened to him.
I hope that perhaps the later census will reveal his location and
whether he was imprisoned or hung.

Thank you in advance for any information.
Gloria
