Hello everyone. My name is Sherry Williamson and I live in Canton,
Michigan. I would like to connect with anyone researching the following
families (please forgive me if I am long winded) All came from Scotland and
settled in the Waterloo / Haldimand, ON area:
My 4th great - James CALDER (1787-1869) b. Nairn, Nairn, SCT emigrated to
Canada 1832, settled North Dumfries, Waterloo, Ontario. Married first to
Janet MACKINTOSH (abt. 1787 - abt. 1829) of Nairn. She died prior to his
emigration. After his emigration, he married Margaret WYLLIE of Ayr, SCT,
widow of David GUTHRIE also of Ayr. His second marriage with Margaret
produced no children. I am interested in the ancestry of James.
We believe his parents were William CALDER and Isobel LAMB of Nairn. His
was the only christening record that I could find for the couple. James
Calder was a tailor in Nairn and according to his christening record, his
father William was a weaver in Nairn. I did get a bonus with his
christening record, it also listed "James CALDER, the child's grandfather"
as a witness.
I know that he had a sister, Isabella who came over with him. There were no
surviving males to carry James Calder's line in Canada (his son William died
in the cholera epidemic that swept through Galt and surrounding areas July
1834); however am interested in his girls and their families. All of the
girls were born in Nairn, Nairn and all appear to have married Scotsmen.
Isobel CALDER (1809-1894) m. James FORSYTH (1808-1879) of Duffus, Moray,
SCT. They emigrated in 1849 and settled in Oneida, Haldimand, ON. Their
first four children were born in Scotland. I know that one of their sons
(William) ended up on a farm in Midland, Michigan but believe the rest
remained in the Haldimand area.
Janet CALDER (1810-1897) m. Duncan MCDONALD (Abt. 1787-1871) of ??. They
were married 1840 in Nairn. Rumor has it that he was from the Parish of
Cawdor, Nairn; however, in the 1841 census for the county of Nairn, he
indicates being born outside of the county. They also settled in Oneida,
Haldimand after immigrating abt the early 1850's. Can only find three
children, all born in Scotland.
Catharine CALDER - (one of my mysteries) (1816-??). All I know of her is
that she was alive in 1869 when James Calder revised his Will. I have no
idea if she came with her father in 1832 or emigrated later after marriage
or was married at all. The Will only listed the girls with their maiden
names.
Mary CALDER (1818-1902) m. Andrew G. MATHISON (1806-1872) of Selkirk, SCT.
Mary emigrated in 1832 with her father and married Andrew sometime after.
They settled in North Dumfries, Ontario.
My 3rd greats - Anne CALDER (1824-1911) m. James WILLIAMSON (abt. 1816-
1897) of Ayr, SCT. I have all of the descendents of this line. I am
interested in the ancestry of James Williamson. We do not have any siblings
for him. His parents were James WILLIAMSON and Jean SALLERS who were
married 1816 Kilwinning, Ayr. Could not find any christening records of any
children born to them including James. He married Anne about 1842 in Ayr,
Ontario and settled in Oneida, Haldimand on land originally reserved for the
Six Nations Indians. Anne also emigrated with her father in 1832. James
Williamson's parents, I believe, remained in Scotland as I have a photo
labeled "Jean Williamson" and assume that the photograph was taken in
Ayrshire as it lists John Brown, Kilmarnock and Troon as the photographer.
Jane CALDER (1826-Abt. 1906) - m. John or William CAMPBELL. Our original
family tree lists that she married John Campbell; however, on the 1881
Census for Haldimand, I found a Jane Camble, Widow born in Scotland, age 55
with two son's David aged 17 and Alexander aged 15. She is living next door
to some of the Calder's mentioned above. I believe that they also had a son
James who married Magdalen FLETT. On this marriage it notes the parents as
William Campbell and Jane Calder. Of this connection I can not be certain
as I am unsure how James Campbell was tied into this family.
Alexandrina Gordon Mackintosh CALDER (1828 - 1873) m. Hugh CLARK (1816-1904)
of ??. Their first two children were born in SCT. They emigrated between
1852 and 1853 and settled in Oneida, Haldimand, Ontario.
Many thanks for your time, I promise I am only long winded for the first
post <g>. I do have on CD the 1825 Pigot's Directory for the Highlands and
Central Scotland if anyone would like a look up.
Wishing all a safe and healthy new year!
Sherry
