Dear Judy

With the information you have, and a name as common as Scott, you have a bit
of a job ahead.

Assuming they stayed in Scotland, I would suggest that you start by looking
for them in the Census. The 1841 Census is nearest to the dates you have,
but the 1851 Census gives more detail, notable the exact age and place of
birth. In 1841 you get only the age rounded down to the nearest 5 years
(except for children) and whether the person was born in the same county. If
you can find them in the 1861 Census, you can then look for a death
certificate for one or both (death certificates start in 1855). This will
tell you the names of their parents.

Alternatively, you could try looking in the online index at
www.origins.net/GRO which lists all births and marriages to 1899 and all
deaths 1855-1924, and tells you how to order copies of certificates. A
married woman is indexed twice, once under her maiden name and once under
her married name, so go for Jean first. Her death certificate will tell you
whether her husband died before her. But don't forget to check all the
possible spelling variations - Jean, Jeanie, Jeannie, Jane, Jenny and so on.
