maxine-
my greatgrandmother was sarah jane scribner born abt 1833-35
in Vermont
her father was nicholas hale scribner born 1805 Corinth, essex,VT
and her mother
nancy baker younger born 1807 gloucester essex, mass
daughter of william younger and nancy carter
Nicholas Hale Scribner and wife Nancy Baker Younger Scribner
were married in 1832
Sometime after 1836, they left New England by covered wagon -
N.H. Scribner was found on the 1840 census in Licking county ohio
with wife and one daughter (sarah jane)and one son(Nicholas Hale Scribner Jr)
He and Nancy B had 2 other sons (Frances or Frank, and William or willard)
while in Ohio
and in 1842 Nicholas Hale Scribner and daughter Sarah Jane
arrived in what is now Eddyville, Iowa
they lived in a wigwam left by the indians until N.H. Scribner built the
first house in Eddyville, Iowa in the spring of 1843
Nancy and the smaller children met them in Iowa later
I have been searching for several years, but cannot find the other
children of Nicholas Hale Scribner's parents-
N.H.'s father Benjamin Scribner Jr born 1772 and
1st wife (N.H.'s mother) Martha Knight born 1773
Benjamin and Martha were married 1793
a cousin had info that he was the 5th child of 7
but nicholas hale scribner is the only child of theirs i know about
he was very proud of being born in Corinth Vermont-
and they even had that written on his headstone when he died
He and Nancy died in Iowa, and are buried in mahaska county Harrison township
