Ray mentions fees being a hindrance to marriages before civil registration.

I have not found any of mine or my husbands considerable number of Scots
ancestors marrying other than by banns being read on 3 Sundays. I understood
this was the way to do it if you were short of cash for a licence and not in
immediate need of a marriage occuring.
Our ancestors were all working people and there are also a few illegitimate
births recorded. Some, but not all eventually married.
