Ok the regiments that were in Umballa East India in the years 1877-78 are
these

1878-1879 6th regiment Inniskilling Dragoons, nickname the Skillingers were
recruited in Ireland with a question mark

1873-1877 11th regiment Hussars, Prince Alberts Own, nickname the Cherry
pickers were recruited in Essex and surrounding counties

1877-1879 12th regiment East Suffolk nickname The old dozen, recruited in E
Suffolk and Suffolk

1877-1880 63rd West Suffolk Regiment nickname The Bloodsuckers recruited in
W Suffolk

1872 and 1878 85th regiment Bucks Volunteers, The Kings light infantry
nickname Young Bucks recruited in Buckinghamshire

And that is all that is listed in the years that you mentioned

Now this is not to say that your man didnt come from Caithness........ as
sometimes they are already a part of the regiment when re enlistment comes
along and they re enlist .....where they are, be it in Suffolk, Ireland
where ever
Sometimes they belong to another regiment entirely and join another where
ever they are......
I had a man from Sutherland in 1814 that was with the 9th regiment which was
a Norfolk regiment, not sure where he signed up have never found him
again.....so he might have died and then there is no Chelsea pension or
other means to find him....(sometimes) in my case......that is the case

Now I also only looked up Umballa, not all of East India as you gave that as
a place of birth
Have you looked at the British Military Gro records?? if not I can look a
them for you this week (I will be there on Thursday) to find your James
birth or I will look on my laptop to see if I have transcribed it

I might have the MacDonald births on the puter cant remember but I know I
have the marriages and there is no Donald listed, there is one Duncan Donald
MacDonald listed in 1844-46 under marriages but that is it
