From a Robertson Clan history:-
Clan Robertson descends from the ancient Celtic hereditary Abbots of Dunkeld. One of these, Abbot Crinian, married Bethoc, daughter of King Malcolm II [1005-40], and their eldest son was Duncan I [1034-40].
Thus arose the Clan Donnachaidh or "Children of Duncan".
One of Duncan's sons was Maelmare, Earl of Atholl, whose descendant Donnachaidh Reamhar [Stout Duncan] led his clan at the Battle of Bannochburn.
Another descendant, Robert Riabhach [Grizzled Robert], was created Baron of the lands of Straun in Tayside.
He had rounded up the murderers of King James I [ including Sir Robert Graham] and produced them at court, receiving the barony shortly afterwards as a reward.
Grizzled Robert was probably the first to use the name "Robertson" for the clan.
The clansman's crest badge is a hand holding a crown, alluding to the capture of the murderer of King James I.
From a Duncan Clan history:-
The Duncans and the Robertsons, or Clan Donnachaidh, appear to have the same origin......and took their name from Donnachaid
Reamhar [Fat Duncan}.
The subsequent history of Duncan's descendants is more properly given under the history of the Duncans of the East of Scotland represented by the family of Duncan of Lundie in Forfarshire..............
