we have another thought for you.
if Thomas Ireland was employed as a gamekeeper (and Pattison, his
*possible* boss was a JP) then he is very likely to turn up in local court
records as a witness for the prosecution.
if there was a local poaching problem the landowner might have preferred to
employ an outsider who would not be easily influenced by his local pals.
