Hi,

Brooches like these were commonly used as kilt pins and probably are still.
They fastened the outer corner of the kilt to the layer of cloth below to
stop it from blowing up in the wind. All part of the regalia. I certainly
had one when a youngster. The mount was quite elaborate and made of silver
or silver gilt. I dont remember exactly but I think it was a bird's talon.
It would have been shop bought and possibly a grouse.
