Subject: [EDB] MERCHANT MARINE RECORDS

My Edinburgh-born great grandfather Alexander Storm was a marine fitter who
ended up as a ship's engineer. In about 1878 he was living in (and I assume
sailing from) Newcastle upon Tyne. The 1881 census showed him in West
Hartlepool, and (based on some of my father's early memories) I suspect he
settled down there. How should I start finding out at least something about
his career at sea? Would there be any fairly centralized list of shipping
companies in these two cities? At present all I have is a rather
implausible story about a family tortoise he was supposed to have brought
back from South America!
Thanks for any help,
John Storm Roberts
