I was re-reading an unpublished memoir of my grandfather's and came across a
behind the scenes anecdote from his days as a young reporter in E'burgh that
amused me and may tickle another funny bone. He was at the time (1904)
working for The Scotsman when Edward VII came to present new colors to a
battalion of the Gordon Highlanders.
Quote As the old colours were taken along the front of the parade, the
regimental band played what seemed a very pathetic tune. The musicians among
us were certain that they knew the tune but could not remember its name. I
went to the band master afterwards and asked him. For God's sake, he said,
Don't mention that. It was meet Me By Moonlight Alone played slow time.
Unquote.
Good night,
John SR
