Subject: [EDB] Why go to the West Indies?

I cannot recall which list was asking why many emigrated to the West
Indies...one of my rellies did... But, I stumbled on this site for
Edinburgh, which looks interesting... Nothing of a specific
genealogical nature as such, but lots on old Edinburgh and the like.
http://www.scran.ac.uk/ Here, was found the following quote along one
of the links: "Not all emigrants went voluntarily. Some Jacobite
prisoners of war were sent to the West Indies as indentured servants
after the 1745 rising, while Australia was originally a convict
colony." My rellie was a Dr., so one can assume that he, for one, went
to care for the "white" inhabitants of the islands, or the
staffs/staves of the European land owners. Now, we cannot say that
because of this quote all emigrés were "indentured servants," them may
just as well have been legitimate emigrés ...or trying to stay one
step ahead of the baillie!
