Hello Colin
I have a family story that my great great great grandfather James MITCHELL
stayed with his uncle WILLIAMSON next to John Knox's house, and that the
uncle was a professor at the university.
This tale comes from the US side of the family and other bits and pieces are
'close but no coconut' ie the usual thing where details get confused over
the years.
I have searched and searched for this WILLIAMSON to no avail. Timescale
would be early 19thC if the story is accurate, but I think may refer to an
earlier generation, ie the last quarter of the 18thC.
The professor might perhaps be any kind of teacher.
James MITCHELL's father supposed to be an apothecary and I did find a
WILLIAMSON who was a partner in an apothecary firm in that part of town.
That's the nearest I could find.
Interesting, one of James MITCHELL's sons married an AITCHISON from Annan in
Dumfriesshire.
Would be interested to hear if you have any MITCHELL connections in your
WILLIAMSON tree, or any WILKIEs, which is another name from that part of the
family.
Judy
