My 1854 Almanac lists the Roman Catholic clergy in Edinburgh. There was a
Bishop, plus 3 clergy at St Mary's, Broughton St and 4 at St Patrick's
which was in Lothian Street (not Lothian Road, that's different).
Also RC churches at Leith and Portobello.
Sounds as if your ancestor was probably born before civil registration came
in 1855. RC churches would not be included in the OPR records on the GRO
database. Hence the zero result.
So you could contact the National Archives of Scotland but if I were you I
would start by looking on the LDS family search site to see if they have
films for these 4 churches but if they dont then write to the present
bishop.
