Hello Everyone,

I am new to this list.

On the 1881 Census in Preston Lancashire, my great grandmother Isabella
ABBOTT, nee RUTHERFORD, is shown as being born in Edinburgh in 1846. On her
marriage certificate in 1869 her father is shown as William RUTHERFORD,
coachman.

I sent for a birth certificate and it showed her parents as William
RUTHERFORD, Fisherman and her mother as Christian STEEL. The fact that he
was a fisherman worried me, but by the time Isabella was married her parents
were in North Leith Poor House and they did have a coach house, so perhaps he
had become a coachman by then.

I have done years of research on the RUTHERFORDS, CARNIES and STEELS from
Newhaven and visited Edinburgh and Newhaven on a number of occasions.

To my horror, on the 1901 Census in Preston, Lancs it shows Isabella as
having been born in Paisley. She may have been confused, or someone else
gave the information. I have looked at the IGI and other Scottish Records
but have not found an Isabella RUTHERFORD with a father William being born in
Paisley in 1846.

Is anyone researching the families above from Newhaven, who maybe could prove
that the Isabella RUTHERFORD born there in 1846 is definitely mine?

Many thanks,

Anne
