Have recently uncovered a death certificate that indicates a possible
ancestor was the Land Overseer at an AIRSHREY CASTLE (spelling per
the certificate) Wonder if SKS has any knowledge of this castle or
its whereabouts?... the time period would be the early 1800's
Good evening Sheila,
I think your "man's" death certificate refers to
AIRTHREY CASTLE
Situated in the parish of Logie two miles north of Stirling.
The original house was built in 1748 by John Dundas.
It passed through various hands until it was purchased by Sir Robert
Abercrombie in 1798 for £48000.
It remained in the hands of the Abercrombie family until 1898 when bought by
Mr Donald Graham for £75,000
A large addition was built , at a cost of £15000, on the north side of the
castle in 1891.
In 1966 the Graham family passed the castle and estate over to the Secretary
of Scotland for use as a maternity hospital and nursing home.
In 1966 the site was chosen as the site for the University of Stirling and
thus it remains today.
Trust this is of help.
Regards.
