Good afternoon ,
Exactly as you say Judy !
This is just a thumbnail of the background of "Dr Bell's" schools
Alexander Bell was born in St Andrew's on 27th March 1753.
He studied at the local university but did not graduate.
In 1774 he took a job as a tutor in Virginia and in 1787 went to India to
lecture in science
On his return to Scotland in 1797 he published a paper on educating deprived
children under what he called the "Madras system".
He held various educational posts throughout the U.K. and in 1831 he set up
a £120000 Trust deed to to be divided into 12 equal parts of £10,000 to set
up new schools in his name for underprivaleged children.
5/12ths to go to St Andrew's and 1/12th each to Edinburgh, Glasgow,
Aberdeen, Inverness ,Leith and the Royal Naval School in London.

Trust this is of help.
Regards.
John.
