Good morning,
Thanks to large number of Listers who have written to me personally on
this subject - much appreciated.
I will reply directly to you all in due course !!
There is an excellent website
www.madras.fife.sch.uk/archive/articles/therevdrandrewbell.html
which gives eight pages of information on the man himself and his life.
>From around 1830 a great effort was made by a number of churches and many
individuals in and around central Edinburgh to endeavour to educate children
, especially the poor, and to teach skills to young adults .
One such church was St Cuthbert's Church ,at the west end of Princes Street,
In 1837 they had up and running the "Charity Work - House".
Here , in that year, 539 people were working at various trades. There was a
school attached for nearly 200 pauper children and also a sewing school.
On a point of interest in 1867, when the Caledonian Railway was built, the
C W-H was moved to an old mansion house some two miles to the north. This
building is now the oldest part of the Western General Hospital on Crewe
Road South.
Trust this is of interest.
Regards.
John.
John D.Stevenson,
Edinburgh.
