married in Cockpen parish c 1848.

because you only had a 'c' date I wondered if your evidence was from an
index, a transcription - or perhaps from one of the other types of record
which require parent details.
If you have a photocopy of the original, could the word be HOGGAN or HUGGAN
- a fairly common name in southern Scotland.
Of course, this would chuck a spanner in the the works.
