This is my first contribution to this list.
I would be grateful for any help with the following question(s), please.
Background
I have the will of William PETERS who was the Minister of Kinross. He
made the will in 1890. He died in 1894. The Probate - is that the right
word for Scottish Wills? - was granted to Margaret Peters and Jessie Ann
PETERS, his daughters. The Inventory is signed by Margaret PETERS.
Questions
1. If Margaret PETERS was married by 1890, is he likely to still have
referred to her by her maiden name? (I am aware that a woman's name in
Scotland stays with her. But to what extent?
2. Could she still have signed as Margaret PETERS on the
Testament/Inventory? in 1894 even though that was not her 'married' name?
If anyone is linked to the PETERS family I would be delighted to hear
from them

Seems unlikely that he (or his lawyer) would have referred to her by
her maiden name alone - more likely Margaret PETERS or BLOGGS.
Have you checked the Scotsman archive for info inc perhaps an obit
for the Rev.? Which denomination was he?
it would seem that Scotland had its own married women's property act
prior to this date but it would be worth double checking whether
married women were eligible as executors.

Hi - I'm a new poster to this list. Writing to know if anybody has
information about the Coutts and/or Cunninghams in Edinburgh in the
18th Century.
In particular, there was a Marion Cunningham who married John Philp,
a tailor in Leith, in 1774, She was the daughter of Agnes Coutts and
Patrick Cunningham, a wright who lived in a wynd off Castle Hill.
Agnes seems to have been a daughter of Thomas Couts, merchant
burgess, and Isobel Greig.
Does this ring any bells with anybody?
