I am intrigued by this as I believe my 3g grandfather James MITCHELL
lived in the same street at some point. I am just wondering how Irene
found your John Nisbet's death as I have tried everything I can think
of to find the death of James MITCHELL and wonder if there is an
angle I have missed. One MI index to try by the way would be the Dean
Cemetery which is fairly close and I think has an index of some sort.
Although of course proximity is no real guide - you should also look
near places with earlier associations with the family if you know of
any. John NISBET might have found a place in a family lair somewhere.

Getting back to James MITCHELL, he was a joiner, married in 1828 at
the Portsburgh chapel, and christened his first two (known) children
in Stockbridge in 1830 and 1832. The minister was Mr Renwick who I
believe was a seceding minister. The addresses given to me by distant
relatives in the US include Bedford St and Dean St which are in the
same bit of Stockbridge as I lived in as a student - having no idea
that there was any kind of family connection with the area.

My working hypothesis is that James MITCHELL and his wife Ann (SMITH)
moved to Birkenhead sometime after the birth of their youngest child
in 1837 and died there before the 1841 census. I also have a
photocopy of Ann's seat card for a church in Nicolson St, giving her
address as Romilly Place, this was in bible she left to her daughter.
But this is only a theory - they may well have died in Edinburgh.

There are family stories about Ann - including that she died of
cancer - but no mention of James other than a note that he was 'of
Kelso'. His mother was probably Mary Wilkie as his second daughter
was Mary Wilkie MITCHELL. This fits with a Mitchell family of...Ratho.

James and Ann are both down as deceased on their son's marriage cert
of 1858.
