Pam,
What you are reading as "Meprs" is probably "Messers" from the way
that double "s" was written. It
could be that the business in question was owned by a pair of
Aitchison relatives.

Re: the marriage. It was common for Scottish couples to cohabit as
legally married persons as long as
their intent to live together was demonstrated or declared in some
way. Church adherents might go for the reading of
Banns, but not all of them did, nor do all of the records survive.
So they might have been 'married' in that context.
