I am going by memory, but I am thinking the only ones I saw sponsored were the children born out of wedlock or to widowed mothers.

> Does anyone know what the role of a sponsor for an early 1700s baptism
would have been? I have a family where the first three children's baptisms
all had witnesses and a sponsor. I have looked at other families of the same
time period and place but they only had witnesses and no sponsor.
