Hello Lou,
welcome to the fife list.
Like Jim I can't give you any information on this particular person and have
no great knowledge of AUCHTERLONIE in general but I agree that the name has
a long history in Fife. I think the name originated in Forfar which is not
far away. I also have AUCHTERLONIE in my family - a side branch of the line
I am descended from gave rise to a Willie AUUCHTERLONIE who was a very
successful golfer (??early 20th century) based in St Andrews. The
AUCHTERLONIE name continues today as golf club makers in St Andrews.
We used to have a real AUCHTERLONIE expert (Walter Savige)on this list but I
have not seen a message from him for a long time - I shall send you his
contact details personally. If you can not obtain the information you would
like from Walter I suggest you try to find someone who can transcribe the
more recent certificates for you. I suspect (fingers crossed) that when you
have tracked back to where the AUCHTERLONIE came from you might find a vast
wealth of pertinent information posted by the aforementioned Walter!
Good Luck,
Olive.
