Dear James,

I have searched the 1881 census for James FERGUS born 1877 in Glasgow and
the only 'match' is a James McFERGUS - so not yours.

I also searched Fernie Street, Glasgow and could find no families of FERGUS
or NOBLE. The closest I found was McPHERSON. They also had general
occupations so I do not believe it was army accommodation (but I may be
wrong).

Fernie Street no longer exists but I know that it did in 1888 as my gg
grandmother died at number 14 in that year. I have found a Fernie Gardens
(using Multi Maps), which is in the Maryhill area. Perhaps the original
street wasn't too far away from here?? Here is the link:
http://www.multimap.com/map/places.cgi?maxrows=25&startrow=0&db=ap&client=eu
rope&addr1=&addr2=Fernie+Gardens&addr3=Glasgow&pc=

I also searched for Walter FERGUS and Mary FERGUS but there were too many
and I would need to know an approx year of birth or place. If you have this
information please let me know and I will have another look for you.

Kind regards,
Karen Paine

Dear List,

On 04/11/1877 my great-grandfather, James Noble Fergus, was born in 5 Fermie
(Fernie?) St, Maryhill to Mary Noble and Walter Fergus (Soldier (Pte) 78th
Highlanders).

Could anyone please let me know if this street still exists, where it is or
was and who else might have been living there at the time? Could it have
been accommodation for soldiers' wives, or was it Mary Noble's family home?

Thank you for any help you can give.

Regards,

James Fergus
London
