Hi Barbara et al,
I've got a lot of data on Mathesons of all spellings in Glasgow and
surrounding counties. This looks like your people:
OPR Eastwood (RFW) 2 Apr 1836: John Mathieson marriage to Mary Makinney
1841 Census: Back Wynd, Glasgow High Parish. (ref GRO 644/1 ED 214 p7)
John Mathieson (36, labourer, b Ireland abt 1815), Mary (30, b IRL abt
1811), Catherine (3, b Lanarkshire abt 1838), David (1, b Scotland, outside
Lanarkshire abt 1840)
1851 Census: 29 Kirk St, Calton Par, Glasgow (ref GRO 594 ED 18 p9)
John Mathieson (head, married, 34, carter, b IRL abt 1817), Mary (wife,
maried, 34, b IRL abt 1817), Catherine (daughter, 13, scholar, b Glasgow abt
1838), Archibald (son, 7, scholar, b Glasgow abt 1844), John (son, 2, b
Glasgow abt 1849)
1856 Marriages (ref GRO 644/2 #89):
11 Apr 1856 at The College, Glasgow High Par after the forms of the Church
of Scotland Cathren Mathison, Dressmaker, 18, spinster of 66 Backwynd,
Glasgow, daughter of John Mathison, labourer (deceased) and Mary McKinney to
Thomas McVey, Moulder, 18, bachelor of 53 King St, Glasgow, son of George
McVey, weaver and Agnes Russell. Witnesses: John Grant & A Wilson
Your John Mathieson had obviously died before Cathren's marriage, and since
there is no record of his death in the Public Records between their
inception on 1 Jan 1855 and 11 Apr 1856, he must have died between the
census on 30 Mar 1851 and 31 Dec 1854. I haven't got any info from the
church burial records fro that period, but generally they don't contain
enough info to establish identity 100% (unless it happens to be an entry for
a married woman, where sometimes both her husband's and her maiden names are
given).
According to the IGI, Thoams McVey and Catherine had the following family:
Ann Jane b 24 Aug 1857, Glasgow Central District
Mary b 10 June 1859, Glasgow High
Thomas b 26 Apr 1861 Galsgow High
John Mathieson (McVey) b 13 Oct 1863
James b 8 Aug 1865 Hutchesontown
Thomas b Hutchesontown 20 Mar 1867
Mary b 27 May 1871 Glasgow Clyde
Catherine shows up in the 1881 census at 23 Yate St, Barony Par, Glasgow
(ref GRO 644/2 ED56 p8):
Thomas McVey (head, lodger, married, 42, fish curer, b Glagow abt 1839),
Catherine (wife, married, 41, b Glasgow abt 1840), Ann J (daughter,
unmarried, 21, fish curer, b Glasgow abt 1860, Thomas (son, 14, scholar, b
Glasgow abt 1867), Catherine (daughter, 5, b Glasgow abt 1876), Ann J
Patchel (grand-daughter, 1, b Greenock abt 1880)
I hope this helps you and please contact me if you need any clarification
Regards,
Ken Mathieson,
Uddingston, Lanarkshire

Subject: [Glas.] MATHESON John & Mary
> I have a Mary MATHESON widow aged 37 and a son John 10 yr and a daughter
Mary Ann 7 yrs who came to AUS arriving on the Alfred January 1860. On a
microfilm of NSW Immigration Deposit Journals Film 2669) I find a reference
to Mary and the children with a deposit of 12 pounds for Mary and two pounds
each for the children paid in may 1859 by an Alice Higham. Mary is described
as a Widow, House Servant and living in the house of Mr James Steel, Wine
Merchant, 73 & 82 Stevenson St, Glasgow.
>
> Mary's husband was a John Matheson who was a Coach Driver. Both the
children were born Glasgow and when Mary died in Brisbane QLD AUS 28 Dec
1897 it is stated that there were 3 males and 2 females pre-deceased her.
Both son John and Mary Ann were alive when she died.
>
> How can I find more information on this family? Mary was born County
Antrim and her father's name was Archibald McWhinny and mother's names Alice
McKenna.
>
> John the husband was obviously deceased prior to May 1859. I haven't been
able to locate the family on the films of the 1851 Census.
