Among the Longstreet Cemetry inscriptions there are several which indicate
direct connection with Islay; others mention Jura, Argyleshire and just
Scotland. The following bear the inscription "Native of Island of Islay,
Scotland"
Daniel McArthur - d 9.8.1819 aged 74
Diarmid McDiarmid - d 23.7.1853 aged about 75 years
Janette Gillis McDiarmid - d 11.8.1863 Aged 55. Consort of DA McDiarmid
Capt Angus McDiarmid - d 3.5.1856 aged 24 son of above
Archibald McFadyen - b 1754 d 1830
*Mary Buie McFadyen - d 20.11.1800 aged 37. Consort of Archibald McFadyen
*Dougald McFadyen - b 1.11.1821 d 14.9.1892
*Annie McFadyen - d 16.4.1925 aged 87 Wife of Dougald
Janet McPhail - d 9.8.1899 aged 67 "Wife of Neill"
Margaret Ray - d 8.10.1849 aged 90. "Wife of Daniel Ray"
Those marked with* do not bear Islay inscription but are associated with the
McFadyen Family from Islay. For your information the Glasgow Islay
Association produced a feature in its 1997 Annual Gathering Programme
detailing the connection between Islay and NC with the article particularly
relating to the McFadyen family and the Lobelia community which Longstreet
Church formed part of until it became part of Fort Bragg Reservation in
1918. There is an annual Longstreet Reunion which is held in the grounds of
Longstreet Church. If it is of interest I could put the article on to the
GIA website.
