Re: the clearances - I really enjoyed reading all the background to the
emmigration aboard the Damascus in 1862 in which 120 people left Islay for
Ontario and Quebec. Only 31 people paid for the trip themselves. The rest I
believe were aided by John Ramsay.

It has been sometime since I read that film. Not only does it give alot of
background but it lists all the passengers in families along with ages and
the cost of their passage. The fun part was finding them in censuses and
other records to figure out exactly who they were. Especially when it did
things like list the wife as Mrs. Neil Matheson or Widow McCuaig.

Other family names on this list include Beaton, McArthur, McTaggart, Smith,
McEwan, McKenchie, Johnstone, McKenzie, McNab, Campbell, McInnes, McPhail,
Carmichal,

If anyone is interested order FHL film #0918682. It is called Kildalton
Charter Chest. Basically I think these are estate papers and has lots of fun
stuff on it. I believe there is also a second film #0918683 but I have not
looked at this film and am recalling the number just from memory.
