Subject: [SCT-ISLAY] Re: SCT-ISLAY-D Digest V00 #84

When we were on Islay, we were told by someone that some of the Bell's
changed their name from Campbell after the Jacobite uprising because they
were fighting for the wrong side. Sounds plausible.
I have recently been corrsponding with descendants of the Mary
Sinclair/Duncan Bell you referred to, Toni. I think there is some connection
there for my Catherine Bell, but don't have enough info yet. Do you have
more info on this family, especially their descendants in Canada.
I have 2 Catherine Bell's on my file: Catherine #1born 1/31/1836 Gerrach
parents were Neil Bell/Mary Turner. She married Archibald McLean in Erin,
Ont. 10/30/1861.
I think he was from Islay as well, but have no info. They moved from Ont. to
Inkster, ND & are buried there. Going to a McLean reunion in ND in Aug. so
hope to find more info then. I have been given an ancestor for Neil Bell,
but have not confirmed anything as yet. I also have a list of her siblings &
the McLean children if anyone thinks this would be of help to them.
Catherine #2 is the one I am interested in finding now, since the previous
one has turned out to be wrong, ie:is not our ancestor. We think she was
born about 1836, as well, because of the tombstone dates: d) 6/7/1899 age 63.
She married John Ferguson (from Islay) prior to 1861 (surmised because they
are listed on the 1861 census) There is a Catherine Bell/John Ferguson
marriage 1/16/1856 listed on the Erin web page but haven't been able to find
records to establish parentage, as yet, etc. Their homestead was in the
Arthur, Wellington Cty. area. She married
Archibald Shaw after John died in 1870. He was married to Flora
McEachern from Islay, so this leads me to believe he was also. Catherine &
Arch Shaw moved to Rushford Township, Park River, ND. with their families in
the later 1800s.
Several of the Islay families, or their children, that settled in the various
parts of Ont. later moved on to ND, Manitoba & Saskatchewan. Our Ferguson's
have many connections with Gillespies, Bruce's, Johnston's, McLean's & Bell's
from Islay, but so far I can't the right info for our ancestors.
We are also looking for info On Alexander Patterson m Ann McCormick--lived in
Harriston, Ont. Have been told he was from Renfrewshire, Scot.
Also researching MacMaster's & McLarty's from Wellington/Waterloo
areas of Ontario. MacMaster's from Isle of Arran, Scotland.
Would be happy to share any info I have with those interested.
Really enjoy the messages from everybody!
Thanks in advance for any help! we receive!
Edie & Dave Ferguson
