My MacTaggart connection to Islay...

In the early 1900s my 2nd great-grandfather, Major J.J. Walters wrote of
his mother's family.

The Duke of Hamilton’s daughter Lady Anne married Captain Adge[1] their
daughter (Mary I believe) married Captain McTaggart who was my mother’s[2]
grandfather.
My mother’s[3] father married a Miss MacGibbon[4] sister to the MacGibbon[5]
who is
mentioned in the Queen’s book. Their brothers were Officers in the Army &
some of them were killed in the Crimean war.

1. No information found in Debretts. Spelling may be attributed to Scotish
pronounciation and/or is missing letters of full word.

5. Miss MacGibbon (elderly lady), mentioned in Queen Victoria's, "More
Leaves From A Journal, A Life in the Highlands, 1862-1882"; a visit to
Inveraray, Sat. 25-9-1875.

John Mac(In)Taggart & Eleanor MacGibbon married in Bowmore 8-9-1804 (John
died before 1837 in Islay or Glasgow, Eleanor died 13 Mar 1841 NSW).

A "Question Mark" has been placed against spouses, whose marriages have
been confirmed by register only (or IGI), and no other source.

Those who emigrated to Australia made the journey over a period of time.
John & Margaret MacAlister, w/ son Donald, and Alexander & Flora Johnston
on the 'Portland' in 1837. Eleanor MacTaggart (widowed) w/ children
Lachlan, Ellen and Mary Ann on the 'St. George' in 1838. Jessie Currie
(widowed?) w/ her 4 children on the 'Bee' in 1855.

No information about John MacTaggart (Eleanor's husband), has been handed
down. Recent research, has revealed only his occupation, that of Farmer
and Hotel Keeper, in Bowmore. A researcher some years ago found he was
involved in local politics in Islay (unconfirmed). John MacTaggart is said
to be the grandson of the Duke of Hamilton, whose ancient seat, "Brodick
Castle", is on the Isle of Arran, not far from Islay.

The name "Tomberack" has been known as the town or property name of Eleanor
MacGibbon's family. However, the location of Tomberack is yet to be found
and may have been situated in Inveraray or somewhere on Islay. New evidence
suggests it refers to a small hamlet called "Tombreck", in the parish of
Weem, Perthshire, where the family may have originated, prior to their
move Argyllshire.

Regards,
John
