To be honest you don't want to hear my stories. I started going to my
Grandmother at 2 years old, she lived in Port Charlotte by that time. My 3
oldest sisters were evacuated there for the duration of the war so they have
better stories than me.

As a teenager in the 60s another of my sisters and I, plus 11 of our friends
always stayed in Bowmore for 2 weeks in boarding houses - not with relatives
so we had a ball. We were known as one of the 13 and all we did was dance.
Every night except Sunday there was a dance in some village hall and we went
to every one, sometimes we had Wednesday at home to rest up for the weekend.
Before that we went to the Sea View Hotel in Jamieson Street and had our own
ceilidh.

A couple of my friends actually married local boys.

My memories of Islay are of walking every day hoping to get a lift on any
vehicle that came along. Sitting outside Bobby Hodgkinson's shop talking
to all the old men. Doing my duty visits and rushing home to get ready for
the dancing.

It wasn't a wild holiday but a very enjoyable one.

Last time I was there, 3 years ago, I took my husband who's American for the
first time and he feel in love with it. It wasn't quite the same - not as
many dances but I can't keep away.

If you ever get the chance ask some of the old timers about the time the
Army brought in a boiler for Bowmore distillery. I'll leave you guessing
on that one.
