Toni I have been conversing with someone concerning a Hugh MacDougall who was
born in Islay circa 1817 who emigrated to Tobago, West Indies (time unknown)
and died there in 1866. He had a brother Alexander who also emigrated to
tobago but again very little information. Can you advise if there is a Hugh
& Alexander MacDougall listed on the pages you copied from the book at the
Mitchell Library as if my memory serves me right they were dated at 1828.
Here's an interesting story which shows you are not far from Islay or
Ileachs. I was on the phone to my cousin Innes in Australia last night who
owns a butchers shop in Brisbane. He left Islay for Australia in his later
years so still has a strong Islay accent. Anyway one day a shopper came in
and on hearing his accent asked him where he came from, to which Innes
replied "Islay". "Oh" said the woman "my great grandfather came from Islay
and he was a McKechnie from Bowmore" The woman was amazed that Innes too was
a McKechnie and from Bowmore so much so that he had to take out his driving
licence to prove it!
Regards Eric (ps sunny in Glasgow today)
