Subject: [SCT-ISLAY] Contributions to I-SPY
Date: Tue, 1 May 2001 15:08:39 -0400
Hi List:
I am getting a number of inquiries about how and what to contribute to I-SPY.
The I-SPY website now has an active link to information about making contributions.
When decided what to contribute, please keep these points in mind:
(1) I-SPY is for natives of Islay who immigrated to other lands.
I don't want information about their descendants, unless the Islay native is also mentioned in the information. (It will just get too big too quickly if I start adding descendants.) Similarly, I don't want to add information about their lives in Islay -- other sources, including the Islay Cultural Database, will address information about life on Islay. If you are unsure if your info qualifies, just email and ask me.
(2) I-SPY is for documented information.
My purpose in creating I-SPY is to help online researchers find leads to further information on their ancestors who emigrated from Islay. I encourage anyone who uses I-SPY to check the original source for themselves. To that end, the information you contribute must be fully documented so as to allow someone else to find the source for themselves.
(3) Full source information must be provided.
If you want to send me some information that appeared in a newspaper, please include the newspaper's name, the date, the page number, as well as the city or township the paper was printed in, and if possible the availability of the paper (where can others go to find it?)
If you want to send me information excerpted from a book, please include title, author, publisher, publishing date, ISBN number if possible.
For cemeteries, please send the name of the cemetery, the street or road it is located on (including lot and concession if possible), the city or town, county, province/state, etc.
For information gleaned from census records, please send the year of the census; town, county, prov/state; and any section # or page # information that is available, so another researcher can find it without having to scroll through the whole microfilm!
Other types of information: be thorough, and send as much information about the source and where to find it as possible.
If you have any further questions about contributing information for I-SPY, please feel free to e-mail me. Remember, even one name can make a difference, if it is the name another researcher is looking for!
Tamara
