Hello Ann,
You do have a difficult task on your hands, don't you?
Have you tried looking for his birth as John McEachern? Would his birth fit
in with Marion McEachern's other life? I mean was he born before she
married and had her legitimate children? You may need to try different
variation of both Marion and McEachern.
If you are pursuing the other avenue re Ellen Maclay, it might be worth
searching Poor relief Records? And what about School Rolls?
Was there formal adoption as far back as 1888?
Not much help, more questions, no answers, but keep searching and please let
me know if you have any success.
Johan Keith Lochridge.

confirm his birthplace as Islay. (RAF Papers Blackwatch Records and 3
marriage Certificates) However I am unable to find any record of his birth.

both parents names I can find on Islay but in social class are worlds apart,
and married to different people.

>However there were few births in the district of Kilmeny in 1888 there was
a male child born May 29th (my Grandfathers Birthdate) named Archibald
Maclay, his mother was Ellen and there was no mention of the Father \Ellen
was born in Glasgow.

>On a visit to Lochgilphead I obtained this certificate and on the bottom
written we thought perhaps by the Parish Priest it states:" This woman left
the Island in 1892" no mention of her son.

>Someone kindly dipped into the records at Edinburgh to try and find what
happened to Ellen but could not locateher.
>However since logging on to Scots Org I did find her in the 1891 Census wit
h a family named McMillan working as a servant no child was with her.

>I have tried every way to locate a death for Archibald and to locate him on
the Census but to no avail. Perhaps I am barking up the wrong tree, But
could Archibald be my Grandfather?

>The reason I am suspicious are that the person he says is his Father(Donald
Turner Martin) owned Dunlossitt house on Islay and had another life
altogether and his Mother Marion MacEachern also.
