Dear Colin:

According to my 2001 List of Masonic Lodges, recognized by New Mexico, there
appears to be only Kildalton No. 552 in Port Ellen. There are 1156 Masonic
Lodges in Scotland. As addresses are not shown, I would suggest that you
contact the Grand Secretary:

Mr. C. Martin McGibbon, A.S.C.A., Grand Secretary
Grand Lodge of Scotland, A.F.& A.M.
Freemasons' Hall
96 George Street
Edinburgh, EH2 3DH
Tel: 0131-225-5304
FAX: 0131-225-3953

He can provide you with the name and address of the local Lodge Secretary, as
well as the date of the Lodge Charter, which will give you a range of years
in which you might be interested. I don't know the progress of Freemasonry
in Scotland from its formal organization in England in 1717, but I would
presume that the Islay Lodge is at least 200 years old. I believe that the
oldest record of minutes of a single Lodge is from 1598 in Edinburgh.

As you may be aware, each Grand Lodge maintains a listing of all men who have
ever been a Mason in their jurisdiction. Therefore, you might be able to
obtain some information from his office. Occasionally, these records may
have been damaged or destroyed fire, flood or other disaster down through the
years. Also, many of the older Grand Lodges (Scotland's dates from 1736)
have not computerized their ancient records, so researching old membership
rolls might involve spending many hours in a dusty attic or basement to
locate a connection. Also, they may not have a large staff to conduct such
research. Therefore, your letter should probably recognize this difficulty
and patience must be observed in waiting for their reply.

Good luck in your research,

Don Davidson, Secretary
NM Lodge of Research, A.F.& A.M
Los Alamos, New Mexico USA
