Subject: [SCT-ISLAY] Jamieson St Bowmore
In my constant search for relatives I leave no stone unturned! And that leads me to these comments and questions.

I reviewed Ted's Excellent Adventure in developing the Excel death record spreadsheet and noticed the address of some Gilchrist's living on Jamieson St in Bowmore. This got me thinking about land ownership and the accompanying records. Land records such as indexes, deeds, tax rolls etc helped me understand my Simcoe County relatives. But some questions come to mind:

When did substantial ownership of property happen for the people of Islay?
Did the town people own land first before the country folk?
Were there records kept of land transactions?
Where are these records held?
How old are these records?
Did the Gilchrists living on Jamieson in the 1850 and 1860's own their land or were they tenants?

Any thoughts?
