Hi Steffenie,
I found Alexander MacDougall, wife Mary, daughter Mary (unmarried) and
boarder Hugh McArthur in the 1881 Census. Based on this do you think that
maybe Alexander's father was also Alexander, instead of John, and mother
Bella Mae (maiden name unknown)?

I was not able to identify any other children of Alex and Mary in the 1881
Census. Mary McDougall and Hugh McArthur married in 1883, Kildalton (per
Scotlandspeople). Daughter Ann McDougall married Donald McDougall in 1863,
but I can't identify them either in the 1881 Census:
KILDALTON #541 MARRIAGES 1863
# 2 12 Mar 1863 C of S
Donald McDougall 34 Coll McDougall Marion Campbell
Ann McDougall 18 Alexander McDougall Mary Ann Campbell
Another "living and breathing confirmed relation" is Lin Johnston who is also
your 4C1R. She lives in Australia and is descended from your Ann Johnston's
brother Alexander. Another is Peter Matthews (who I think also lives in
Australia) whose ancestor Margaret Johnston is a sister of the John Johnston
who married Mary Johnston who is a sister of your Ann Johnston. Very
complicated sentence! He may turn out to be a blood relative when we find
the relationship between Margaret Johnston's father Duncan (married to Cath.
McIntyre) and our ancestor Alexander (married to Mary Graham). Both Lin and
Peter are on this Islay list too.
Glad to find out that you live in Pennsylvania. I am also trying to track
down a Grace Johnston, illegitimate dau. of my gg-Uncle Dugald Johnston, b.
1868. Grace, according to family lore, "married someone who was an executive
with Bethlehem Steel Works [Pennsylvania] in USA". She was a witness to the
marriage of my paternal grandparents in 1888 at Laphroaig, so she must have
left for the USA after that.
All for now, let's keep searching.
