Aye Laurie - tis a pity we didn't meet before you scampered to BC *grin*
Perhaps when you are visiting ON the next time??? In the meantime....
Part of the reason you might have difficulty in finding the Owen Sound
connection is that those McCuaigs changed their name to McLeod. Hector
McCuaig/McLeod and family would be the uncle and other relations that James
and Finlay visited. I was fortunate enough to meet Hector's son James
McLeod and wife Rose McClelland prior to James' death in 1998 and Rose's in
1999. Rose wrote several historical books including Sarawak Saga, Sarawak
being the township where they lived. We still visit Rose's siblings.
I'll be in touch later...
Cheerio
Sue Visser
PS You still have relations on Islay!

Subject: [SCT-ISLAY] Thank you for the McCuaig and MacDougall interest.
Here's my line.
Hello and thank you so much for all your kind replies re McCuaigs and
MacDougalls,
First, to Celia Geary and Toni Sinclair - I'm a MacDougall only by
marriage. My husband Joe is a Cape Bretoner, and his people are apparently
from the Moidart area.
To Sue Visser - We just moved here from London, Ontario; I wish I'd made
your acquaintance earlier. I love the idea of tracking down the various
lines of McCuaigs. I'm a complete newbie, but let me know what your plans
are.
To J. Lorne Campbell - At present, I don't have a record of McCuaig
girls that married Campbells, but I'll check as info comes in.
To Neil MacCuaig - I hope to hear from you when you get back and you've
looked at the submission that follows.
To Aaron McLeod - A pity your forbears gave up the graceful, lilting
name of "McCuaig". I didn't find Henry McCuaig m. Christina McKay in my
bunch, but I'll get back to you if it ever comes up.
To Helen Campbell Blair - I found a reference to Ontario McCuaig
connections in a record written by my g.g.uncle Alex McCuaig. He and his
two brothers James and Finlay were the ones who emigrated to Canada. Alex
says that around 1910 James and Finlay stayed for a time in Owen Sound, ON
"with Uncles (sic) and other relations.. who had settled around there many
decades previously". Eventually, after trying BC, the three brothers all
ended up in Bengough, Saskatchewan.
Finally, here is my McCuaig line:
My father is Donald James McCuaig (b. April 23,1933, Bengough,
Saskatchewan) His siblings: Mildred, Ann, David, Nancy.
My dad's father was James McCuaig (b. Dec. 8,1906, Bellshill,
Lanark) with siblings Isabella, John, Finlay, Flora Ann, Hector and Albert.
This James married Olive Rowat in 1932 in Ogema, Sask.
His father was James McCuaig (b. Oct.18, 1881, Port Ellen, Islay),
with siblings Alex and Finlay. This James married Mary Chalmers in 1905 in
Glasgow.
His father was James McCuaig (b. May 26, 1859, Cragabus, Oa, Islay)
with siblings Rose, Catherine and Hector. This James married Flora McDuffie
in 1859 in Bowmore, Islay.
His father was James McCuaig (b. 1815 Oa, Islay). I have no record
of siblings. He married Grace Paterson in Oa, Islay around 1850.
His father was Finlay McCuaig (b.1791), who married Catherine
MacMillan around 1812.
Well, sorry to have turned this into an epic. Thanks again for being so
welcoming. Laurie
